Associate Scientist - Protein Expression

SALARY: £20,000 – £28,000/pa, dependent on experience



Oxford Genetics, a leader in synthetic biology, is a specialised contract research organisation offering services to support the discovery, development and production of biologics. A unifying theme across the portfolio is expertise in DNA design, expression system optimisation, cell line development and engineering of viral delivery systems. The Associate Scientist – Protein Expression will work as part of an internal function for the generation and characterisation of recombinant proteins for in-vitro applications. The appointee will work with Scientist and Senior Scientist colleagues to expand these services and offerings within the company. This function sits within the Protein Therapeutics business unit which encompasses antibody discovery, protein engineering and expression, and cell line development. 

Prior experience working in a laboratory environment is essential, as is familiarity with working to SOPs and producing batch records. Relevant techniques include plasmid preparation, mammalian cell culture and transfection (suspension), harvest/clarification, purification of proteins using PrA/AEX chromatography, and characterisation by HPLC, ELISA and SDS-PAGE. Training will be provided but prior experience in these areas would be advantageous.



  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to define project goals and deliverables, in line the planned project objectives
  • Provide project summaries and reporting, as required
  • To adhere strictly to established quality standards, essential for on-going activities
  • Drafting and review of SOPs and batch records
  • Provide accurate record keeping at all times



  • BSc or MSc in relevant discipline, with experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Commercial/industry experience is preferred but not essential



  • Culturing and transfection of mammalian cell lines (CHO, HEK)
  • Purification of recombinant proteins (PrA, AEX, SEC)
  • Optimisation of cell culture processes
  • Characterisation of proteins via HPLC, ELISA, SDS-PAGE
